House Parent

Boston, MA

About This Role

Job Overview

This is a House Parent role. You're providing a stable, supportive home environment for young people, often in a residential setting around Boston, MA. The work is about guidance more than just supervision. It's creating routines, offering counsel, and being a consistent presence.

Some days are long. Others are incredibly rewarding. You should know that going in.

Duties & Responsibilities

Your day to day will cover a lot of ground. Think of it as running a household with the added layer of mentorship.

  • Daily living support. That means meal prep, ensuring everyone gets where they need to go, and helping manage personal schedules.
  • You’ll be the point person for homework help, conflict mediation between residents, and just listening when someone needs to talk.
  • Administrative tasks come with the territory. Think logbook entries, incident reports if something happens, and coordinating with other staff.
  • A big part of this is maintaining household safety and order. Enforcing agreed upon rules isn't always fun, but it's necessary.
  • Crisis management skills are useful here. Situations can escalate quickly with youth, and you need to stay calm and follow protocol.

Requirements

We're talking about real human skills here, not just what's on paper.

  • A high school diploma or GED is the baseline. Some employers might want coursework in social work or a related field.
  • Previous experience working with youth is a huge plus. Coaching, mentoring, camp counseling; anything that shows you can connect.
  • Patience isn't just a virtue here; it's the job description. You'll need plenty of it.
  • A clean background check and driving record are non negotiable for most positions in this field.
  • The job can be physically and emotionally demanding. You're on your feet, you're engaged constantly, and you carry the weight of your residents' challenges sometimes.

What It's Like In This Role

The team dynamic varies by house but relies heavily on clear communication during shift changes. You have to trust the person taking over from you.

Why You'll Like This Opportunity

The schedule often comes in blocks; like several days on followed by several days off; which can allow for larger chunks of personal time than a typical 9 to 5. Every day is different; there's no autopilot mode in this job.

If you're considering a career in social services, counseling, or education, this role provides frontline experience you can't get anywhere else. You learn about systems, behavior management, and yourself.
