The Job
St. David's Cardiology is part of a national learning health system ; one that's cut stroke response times nearly in half compared to the national average, uses SPOT Technology to catch sepsis earlier than a human can, and runs an Enhanced Surgical Recovery program that actually reduces opioid prescriptions and post surgical readmissions. They're looking for a Cardiac RN in Austin, TX who brings real experience and clinical judgment to the table.
This isn't a general floor nursing gig. You'll work specifically with cardiac and vascular patients ; people dealing with heart failure, valve disorders, high blood pressure, arrhythmias, heart attacks, and vascular conditions. You'll be part of an interdisciplinary care team that includes cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and electrophysiologists. You might even participate in clinical trials and research programs as the clinic needs.
What You'll Actually Do
- Use critical thinking to assess facts and make quick, effective decisions when working with patients who have heart complications
- Interpret data and respond to urgent situations in ways that optimize patient care and produce positive outcomes
- Review test results, draw conclusions, and advise on treatment plans using analytical skills
- Perform and interpret various cardiac and vascular lab tests
- Assist with diagnostic tests like ECGs and EKGs
- Initiate Holter and Event monitors
- Evaluate and monitor heart related devices such as pacemakers
- Monitor patients and their vitals, especially cardiovascular readings
- Assess and interpret lab results
- Work with patients and their families both before and after treatment
- Educate patients on cardiovascular diseases, including preventive measures
- Help diagnose and treat cardiovascular events
- Make critical decisions about initiating emergency medical procedures when appropriate
- Document legible and concise entries in the medical record
- Document a complete medical history on each patient at the initial session and update records appropriately with each visit
- Perform appropriate patient preparation for each visit or procedure
- Do medication reconciliation on every visit
- Greet patients and prepare them for the physician's examination
- Provide general nursing care to patients as needed for office treatment
- Screen patients for appropriate information
- Instruct patients on collecting samples and tests
- Arrange for patient testing and admissions
- Check rooms daily for necessary supplies
- Respond to and refer incoming telephone calls
- Instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions
- Maintain and review patient records and other pertinent information
- Post tests and examination results
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Administer medications in accordance with physician orders
- Maintain current knowledge to assure a safe working environment and demonstrate practical application of all policies and procedures related to safety and infection control
- Use universal precautions in any potential contact with patient body fluids or used patient supplies that may be contaminated
- Project a positive image of the facility in all interactions and support effective team functioning
- Practice and adhere to the "Code of Conduct" philosophy and "Mission and Value Statement"
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education
Graduation from an accredited school of registered nursing is required.
Experience
You need a minimum of three years of registered nurse cardiac vascular experience in an acute care or cardiology clinic setting.
Certifications and Licenses
- BLS required upon hire
- ACLS required within 60 days of hire
- Current unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in accordance with state regulations
- Cardiac Medicine Certification (CMC) through the American Association of Critical Care Nursing (AACN) is preferred
- Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification (CV BC) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is preferred
