
About This Role
What You'll Do
You're the nurse patients see before and after surgery at our ambulatory surgery center in Austin, TX. This means you work in pre admission, pre op, and post op ; or you cross train to cover all three. Surgery schedules shift, so your hours will too.
- Plan and give nursing care for each surgical patient based on their specific needs and the surgeon's orders
- Keep current on IV therapy, med administration and effects, patient assessment, airway maintenance, patient education, and emotional support for patients and families
- Review charts before and after procedures to make sure everything is complete per documentation protocols
- Confirm relevant information is in each chart before the procedure starts
- Participate in hand off communication so nothing falls through the cracks between shifts or departments
- Take part in the anesthesia time out process in pre op before blocks are placed or anesthesia is induced
- Handle medication management including controlled substances; deal with biohazardous materials and surgical specimens; keep inventory stocked in care areas; maintain required logs for temperature, medical gas levels, and QC of CLIA waived tests
Who You Are
You've got solid pre- or post op experience under your belt. You can handle a schedule that flexes with patient needs ; sometimes short notice, sometimes longer days depending on how patients recover. You understand operative procedures well enough to anticipate what comes next.
- Texas RN license ; active right now
- 3+ years of pre- or post op experience
- BLS & ACLS certifications upon hire
- PALS certification within 3 months of starting
- A flexible schedule across days and hours ; this isn't a 9 to 5 desk job
(Relevant education plus experience can substitute for some requirements.) Things that would make you stand out: a BSN; CPAN, CAPA, or healthcare quality certification; bilingual English/Spanish; prior work in an ambulatory surgery center.
The Work Environment & Physical Demands
The pay range is flexible. Hours typically run Monday Friday but change based on what patients need. Some days you'll sit or stand for long stretches. Expect walking, bending, stooping, stretching overhead and down low.
You need good hand eye coordination and manual dexterity for patient care plus using a keyboard phone copier occasionally. Normal hearing eyesight voice projection are necessary too. Physical strength matters: frequent lifting up to 50 pounds occasional lifting more than 50 pounds. And you have to move quickly when patients need something urgent.
