Medical Lab Technician

Emory Health Care·Atlanta, GA

About This Role

The Work You'd Actually Do

This isn't just a screening job. You'd prepare and stain cytologic material for routine procedures, then evaluate the results for validity and report them per standard protocol. Some days you might prep specimens for cytopathologic examination. The core of it: evaluating cytologic material for carcinoma or other diagnoses, completing all daily assigned screening. You'd also review the quality of staining and determine if the specimen is adequate to support a proper diagnosis.

In complex cases, you'd look at all available information and decide whether to release the results, repeat them, or send them up to a pathologist. You'd assist the Pathologist and Radiologist during fine needle aspiration biopsy procedures ; and you need to be competent in giving an adequacy assessment on the spot. Other related duties come up too, as needed.

What You're Bringing

  • A Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical lab science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science. If your Bachelor's is in something else, that works if you graduated from an accredited school of cytotechnology or your science and math coursework meets the certifying agency's requirements.
  • There's an education exception: if you were ASCP certified before they required a bachelor's degree, or if you're a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services ; that Bachelor's can be waived.
  • At least two years of experience under your belt.
  • Experience with Gynecological, Non gynecological and FNA cytology is preferred.
  • Certification as CT (ASCP) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology ; that's non negotiable.
