About This Role
What you'll do
Your main job is to sell. You'll have personal sales goals, and hitting them is how you support the store's targets for sales and profit.
But it's more than just ringing people up. You're building the business. That means promoting our music lesson program and getting out there to network with local teachers, schools, churches, and community groups. You'll give sales presentations using the training we provide, all while developing real relationships with customers.
Every single customer gets your best service. We're serious about building loyalty.
You'll also be involved in the whole store operation. Think merchandising, setting up displays, and general maintenance. There's a security aspect, too; you're responsible for perimeter door keys, register keys, and keeping your personal alarm code secure.
Other duties come up now and then; we all pitch in where needed.
What you need to bring
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- You've got at least two years of relevant work experience under your belt.
- This isn't just any retail gig. You need skilled knowledge of musical instruments and written music. If you don't know your way around a clarinet or a chord chart, this probably isn't the right fit.
The details
The pay rate is $16.00 to $17.00 an hour plus commission. Where you land in that range depends on your location, background, and experience.
Now for the good stuff.
- We have a unique perk called gig leave. If you're a musician who lands a tour, you can take the time off to share your music with the world and come back to your job here afterward.
- The benefits are robust: a 401K plan with a company match and an employee discount program are part of the package.
- The schedule is full time; expect 40 hours each week across five days from Monday through Saturday.
A bit about us
Music & Arts started in 1952 in a small house in Bethesda, MD. The founder, Benjamin O'Brien, originally sold printed music, lessons, dance supplies; the works. He quickly decided to focus purely on music to serve customers better; that focus has never changed.
We've grown a lot since the 90s through organic growth and acquisitions. In 2005, joining with American Music made us the largest band and orchestra instrument retailer in the country. Today we're based in Frederick, MD as part of Guitar Center: over 200 retail stores strong with hundreds of educational reps and affiliate locations nationwide.
